The intersection of Broadway and Hildebrand will be closed for four days beginning Friday, May 2, 2014. This closure, which starts on 9 p.m. on Friday night, will be the last intersection closure of the project. It will open again by 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Area businesses like Cheesy Jane’s, Bill Miller’s and the Wash Tub, along with the University of the Incarnate Word, The Broadway Condos and AT&T were presented with the idea of the four-day closure versus closing over two weekends. They supported the four-day closure option due to benefits such as this being the final intersection closure of the project and expediting the intersection work.
Coordination with area organizations also indicated that conducting the closure at this time would result in slightly less traffic impact due to UIW conducting finals during this week.
An additional benefit comes through the activation of a newly-installed traffic signal on Hildebrand to the west of Broadway on May 5. This activation will allow for two-way traffic along a larger portion of Hildebrand. Traffic will remain one-way from that signal through the Broadway intersection.
Construction crews will continue work that began last weekend. Crews will work 24-hours a day during the closure. They will finish installing box culverts for the storm drainage system across the intersection and also reconstruct the roadway.
A portion of Broadway between Burr and Groveland will also be closed. Traffic will be detoured to local streets.
Eastbound Hildebrand access to southbound Broadway will remain open during the closure, as it has been during previous intersection closures. Access to all businesses will remain available through local streets while the intersection and roadway is closed. Signs will be placed to direct motorists through the detours and to local businesses.
The attached detour map shows the routes open to drivers. Drivers will be diverted with signage to N. New Braunfels before they reach the intersection. Drivers headed east on Hildebrand are required to turn right onto Broadway, where they can continue south or follow the signage toward N. New Braunfels to head north.
All drivers are encouraged to travel at appropriate speeds while using local roads. Electronic message boards are in place to notify motorists of the upcoming closure.
The Broadway Corridor Phase IIIA (Broadway-Hildebrand) project will provide a drainage system designed to convey a 100-year storm event across Broadway Street, improving driving conditions and safety along Broadway Street and Hildebrand Avenue. This project also includes reconstruction of Broadway and Hildebrand with curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, addition of turn lanes and traffic signal improvements. SAWS and CPS Energy will be replacing and adjusting the water, sewer and gas facilities throughout the project area. In addition, this project includes the construction of the approved Broadway Street/Hildebrand Avenue underground conversion project as part of the CPS Energy CIED Program to bury all overhead utility lines at the four corners of the intersection.
