SAN ANTONIO (June 9, 2022) — The City of San Antonio’s Housing Assistance Program is set to stop receiving applications for rental and utility assistance on June 10th at 11:59 pm. The Housing Assistance Program will continue to accept applications for Relocation Assistance to eligible households. A recent article out of the Express News states that, “Rents are up 14.5% percent from a year ago, and 19.6% since the coronavirus pandemic began.” On top of rent soaring through the roof, San Antonio housing prices and property taxes have also risen dramatically. These dynamics along with the end of the CDC’s eviction moratorium has led to a dramatic increase in evictions. According to Bexar County’s latest eviction judgements report, the number of evictions in 2022 (9,783 eviction judgements through June) will likely surpass the number of recorded evictions in 2021 (12,828 judgements). “These numbers are incredibly concerning. The people of San Antonio have continuously felt the strain of soaring housing costs, an increase toward their utility bill, an increase to their day-to-day necessities which has led to working class residents being pushed out of their homes,” Councilwoman Castillo continued, “As long as evictions continue to rise, we will continue to see more people become unhoused. We need assistance and collaboration with all levels of government if we want to reverse this pattern.” For San Antonio residents who are facing eviction, The City of San Antonio’s Neighborhood & Housing Services Department offers support with obtaining legal assistance through the Right to Counsel Program. Residents can call 210.207.5309 or go to sanantonio.gov/NHSD/Programs/FairHousing. Latest evictions numbers are attached.
