San Antonio Water System’s (SAWS) downtown sewer infrastructure cleaning project was completed this past weekend – 12 days ahead of schedule. Crews cleaned and checked 3,400 feet of 8- to 33-inch pipe, seven siphons, and 31 manholes. Work was scheduled around major business and tourism dates including a major music teachers’ conference, and wrapped up well ahead of Spring Break and Fiesta.
While cleaning infrastructure under the downtown streets, several items that turned up in the lines included bricks from old infrastructure and a ladder.
While the work on the downtown sewer lines did cause some delays in traffic, SAWS appreciates the patience of businesses, residents, and employees in the area while this essential work was completed. SAWS is under a consent decree with the EPA that mandates the inspection and cleaning of sewer lines in areas around the city.
More information on the project is available at saws.org/downtown.
Since 1992, San Antonio Water System has been a leader in innovative water management strategies, making San Antonio water’s most resourceful city. Water and wastewater services are provided to more than one million consumers in the San Antonio region. For more information, visit saws.org.
