SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 6, 2017) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced Wednesday he would appoint Juany Torres, Senior Policy Advisory and Director of Community Engagement in the Office of the Mayor, to serve as the liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
According to Equality Texas, San Antonio is home to as many as 80,000 LGBTQ individuals. As liaison, Torres will serve as the point of contact between the Office of the Mayor and the LGBTQ population. In close collaboration with community, Torres will work to identify, elevate and address LGBTQ-related concerns.
“I am committed to serving everyone who calls San Antonio home,” Torres said. “I look forward to embracing relationships with LGBTQ community members and the organizations that serve San Antonio’s LGBTQ population.”
Torres has worked on community engagement across the country, with a focus on serving those who have been historically underserved. As the Director of Community Engagement, Torres is responsible for creating partnerships and increasing access for communities across San Antonio, leading to more comprehensive, inclusive policies by our City government.
“Our entire city thrives when every resident has access to the resources they need to be successful,” Mayor Nirenberg said. “Our commitment to governing with fairness and compassion includes service to the LGBTQ community.”
Torres will work closely with the City’s Office of Equity, which advances equity and inclusion in City government and facilitates the resolution of complaints under the Non-Discrimination Ordinance.
