Councilman Manny Pelaez’s statement on the Special Victims Unit

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 28, 2017) — “I am heartbroken and frustrated by the news that the Special Victims Unit of SAPD has mishandled more than 130 cases,” said Councilman Pelaez. “As the immediate past General Counsel for the Battered Women & Children’s Shelter, I know that a domestic violence victim’s outcry of abuse to a police officer only comes about when the victim trusts that her outcry will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

When that trust is violated, it compounds the all too difficult job done by the Rape Crisis Center, the Battered Women & Children’s Shelter, and the police officers who take their jobs seriously. San Antonians have a right to expect excellence and professionalism from all our police officers. We’ve all been let down.

Honesty and transparency are the only things that will help repair the trust that may have been damaged. I will not be satisfied with anything other than a thorough investigation into these disturbing allegations of misconduct.  I expect that the results of this investigation will be shared with the public and that any corrective action taken will also be subject to public scrutiny.”
