SAN ANTONIO (November 30, 2017)-They may not drive, but our pets do need a license! Animal Care Services will help San Antonio pet owners protect their dogs and cats with a safe, permanent form of I.D. at the latest Microchip MANIA clinic. Slated for Friday, December 1, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Miller’s Pond Community Center, ACS will offer FREE pet microchips for City of San Antonio residents. Miller’s Pond is located at 6175 Old Pearsall Road.

No appointments are needed at ACS’ Microchip MANIA events but residents must ensure their animal companions are leashed or in an appropriate carrier. Free microchips are available for the pets of City of San Antonio residents ONLY and Picture ID and proof of residency are required. ACS implanted microchips include basic lifetime registration and are updateable at any time without charge. The one-time injection is similar to a vaccination and the microchip or “chip” is no bigger than a grain of rice. Local vet clinics and shelters scan animals upon intake with a special handheld device. The pet’s microchip has a unique ID number (similar to a driver’s license number) which can be “read” by this scanner, helping trace the dog or cat back to the owner through their provided contact information. Microchips are required by law for all dogs and cats living in the city of San Antonio.
