SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 26, 2018) – 9,063,542 travelers passed through San Antonio International Airport (SAT) in 2017. This is the first time in the airport’s history that more than 9 Million passengers flew through the airport. This record exceeds the annual record set in 2016 by 5.2% when over 8.6 million passengers traveled through SAT. In December, the airport recorded 784,230 passengers, which represents a 7.3% increase from December 2016. The record month in December brought to a close a full year of record setting months, and extended the trend to 18 consecutive months of record breaking passenger numbers.
“We are celebrating what is truly a very significant milestone – exceeding 9 million passengers served in San Antonio. We are also celebrating our 18th consecutive month of record numbers and passenger growth, in both domestic and international travel—a clear indication of our regions’ economic growth and prosperity,” said Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio.
Domestic traffic increased 7.7% and international passengers were up 1.7% for the month of December. The 784,230 passengers in December is the highest level of traffic for any December on record.
Contributing to the growth and record numbers were the 20 new flights that have either been added or announced at SAT since 2016, and the numerous accolades for customer service excellence SAT has received.
The announcement of the record breaking milestone was preceded by the official ribbon cutting ceremony held to commemorate the opening of the new Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC). Mayor Ron Nirenberg and City Manager Sheryl Sculley were on hand for the dedication of the 1.2 million square feet state of the art facility. The facility makes it convenient for travelers to access rental cars in one centralized, on-site location. The short-term garage is on the first two levels of the facility and the next five levels are designated rental car areas. Access to the rental car area is through the sky bridge, taking passengers directly from the mezzanine level of the terminal to the rental car counters.
“Today’s events show that we continue to listen to what travelers want and the opening of the CONRAC was an integral part of our plan to enhance the customer experience,” said Handy.
