SAN ANTONIO (April 10, 2018) – Three vacant properties downtown are now temporarily activated with pop up shops.

The OPEN Downtown Pop Up Shop Program has opened two vacant spaces on Houston Street with temporary retail shops for six months. Both shops are located inside the Book Building at 140 E. Houston St, adjacent to the San Antonio River Walk.

These are the first pop up shops of its kind, activating a privately owned building for six months or longer until the building goes under construction to become a boutique hotel. Vendors include Socorro Society, Jane of All, Pink & Silver Fashion, and Her Hippie Heart, which are all local, women-owned small businesses. Both shops will have a grand opening celebration on April 13 with live music, food and drinks, and specials throughout the day. Shop hours are Tuesday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Sunday 12-6 p.m.

“We are so grateful and excited for the opportunity to have a long term shop right in the middle of downtown,” said Lauren Gonzalez with Socorro Society. “Through this experience we’re not only given the chance to grow our business right here in San Antonio, but also reach the thousands of people who visit our city over the summer and especially for the Tricentennial celebrations.”

The OPEN program is an initiative of CCDO in partnership with property owners and retailers to offer local entrepreneurs a no cost/low cost short-term lease in vacant downtown properties. The program activates vacant properties by introducing new, creative, and temporary retail locations with a visual aesthetic. OPEN creates an environment that engages customers and authenticates downtown as a vibrant urban space, ready for long-term investment.

The Center City Development & Operations Department has also partnered with Spurs Sports & Entertainment to activate a vacant space at 400 N. St. Mary’s St Suite 109 with a retail pop up shop for two weeks, opening April 13. The grand opening event will feature door prizes, promotions, DJ Quake, and giveaways for the first 100 purchases.
