SAN ANTONIO (April 17, 2018) – San Antonio International Airport (SAT) hosted its inaugural “Fiesta Takes Flight Parade” to kick off the Fiesta festivities beginning this week in and around San Antonio. Today’s parade offered travelers and locals a colorful taste of what Fiesta is all about: royalty, food, music, floats and fun. Airlines, SAT employees, concessionaires and airport partners all participated in this unique flight-centric celebration with festive floats commemorating San Antonio’s Tricentennial and the flavor of Fiesta.
Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio, dubbed the parade “Fiesta Takes Flight,” because it celebrates San Antonio’s rich aviation history and culture.
“This is a special year in San Antonio because we are celebrating our Tricentennial, so this inaugural Fiesta parade is our way of sharing Fiesta with visitors,” said Handy.
Local comedian and television personality Cleto Rodriguez served as the parade’s grand marshal - leading fiesta royalty, mascots, and local celebrities through the terminals and entertaining travelers. Suzy Gonzalez and Michael Menchaca, emerging public artists who created this year’s City of San Antonio Fiesta medal and the extraordinary art throughout SAT’s new Consolidated Rental Car Facility, served as judges and awarded prizes to the top three floats, as well as the largest, most creative, and most festive floats.
This year’s festive parade, with more than 200 participants and observers, showcased the pride and tradition of San Antonio, SAT, Tricentennial and Fiesta.
