Councilwoman Sandoval Supports Taking Local Action to Curb Gun Violence

CONTACT: Matteo Trevino, 210-323-2835

SAN ANTONIO (June 27, 2018) – Yesterday, the City Council’s Public Safety Committee considered potential measures the City of San Antonio could take to reduce incidents of gun violence. District 7 Councilwoman Ana Sandoval released the following statement on the discussion:

“On Monday night I went to a crime scene where a young man, a Good Samaritan, was held at gunpoint in his own vehicle after giving someone a ride home. He was shaken. I can’t imagine the fear he felt or how long it will take him to recover and feel safe driving once again.”

“If there are measures we can take to reduce gun violence while respecting the right to bear arms, we must consider them. Based on City staff’s review of the law, we believe there are local measures we can take to safeguard our community and keep guns out of the wrong hands. These measures could include creating a land use category for firearm sales and refining the City’s incentive policies ensure incentivized projects align with City policies. Additionally, we can work with our partners in the County to strengthen bond conditions for defendants charged with family violence and weapons charges. Our committee directed staff to come back with additional information and proposals on gun safety measures in these areas.”
