Councilwoman Viagran Applauds the Community and Equity Committees Recommendation

CONTACT: Ruben G. Lizalde, (210) 207-7006

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 2, 2018) — Today, the Community Health and Equity Committee held a briefing and made recommendations for staff to move forward in the implementation on the results of the City's equity impact assessment on a Council Consideration Request (CCR) from Councilmember Rebecca J. Viagran related to Boards and Commissions. Staff from the Offices of the City Clerk, City Attorney, City Manager, Equity, and Government and Public Affairs completed an equity impact assessment and developed an action plan designed to enhance meaningful community outreach and engagement, to increase diversity on City boards and commissions, and reduce implicit bias.

“It is important that we have recognized there is a deficit in diversity in our boards and commissions, and the spirit of my CCR was designed to create a more inclusive culture of diversity that is reflective of all San Antonio,” said Councilwoman Viagran. “We now have an opportunity to raise the bar, improve recruitment as well as the performance of our boards and commissions by creating an effective action plan which is critical to the success in expanding opportunities for diversity and inclusion within our own organization.”
