SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 18, 2018) – Today, City Council voted 9-2 to approve the Alamo Property Lease. The following statement was released in response to today’s vote:
“In a letter regarding the Alamo re-imagination City Council received from the American Institute of Architects, they wrote ‘To be a vital destination for everyone, it is equally important to have the plaza be a dynamic and welcoming civic space as it has been for the past 200 years - perhaps the most memorable place in the state.
With this lease, in my opinion, the City of San Antonio is all but ensuring that Alamo Plaza will be a porous space rather than an open space. I find this is unacceptable and not in line with the spirit or the intent of the 1871 deed from the Catholic Church. Great plazas around the world are defined by unfettered pedestrian access, and Alamo Plaza should be no different.
Open access to Alamo Plaza should be guaranteed, not restricted. The approved lease agreement only allows for one entrance into Alamo Plaza to be utilized during museum hours. The amendment that I pushed for today would have allowed for additional access to Alamo Plaza, which I believe should be non-negotiable.
I am appreciative of Councilman John Courage for supporting me in this effort to keep the Alamo Plaza more open and accessible. Likewise, I supported his motion to leave the Cenotaph where it is. However, I am disappointed that the majority of City Council does not deem unfettered access to Alamo Plaza necessary.
Like everyone involved with this project over the course of the last several years, I want to see this project excel. While I’m dissatisfied with today’s vote, I plan to continue working to ensure that the final outcome is one that respects and honors the 300-year history of the Alamo and our city.”
