SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 5, 2018) – The following is a statement regarding the claim filed against the U.S. Federal Government for the wrongful deportation of a U.S. citizen, Julio Cesar Ovalle:

“When I spoke against Senate Bill 4 and later joined the lawsuit challenging its constitutionality, I was concerned  it would require local law enforcement to provide support in potential instances of racial profiling and denial of basic rights by federal agencies. Unfortunately, Mr. Ovalle and his family have had to deal with the cruel reality of our broken immigration system and, in my view, suffered the irreparable harm that follows inexcusable constitutional violations.

As elected officials, I believe we have the responsibility to protect our constituents and ensure unjust and discriminatory laws are defeated before they continue to tear our communities apart. I urge others to not let fear or intimidation keep them from reporting incidents of discrimination or racial profiling at the hands of U.S. Customs & Border Protection federal agents or other law enforcement agents.”
