San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission Announces 2019 Commemorative Events, Art Contest Winner

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 16, 2019) – The City of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. since 1987 with an annual series of events leading up to one of the largest marches in the country honoring the legacy of Dr. King. In 2019, the march will continue in its 32nd year as an official City of San Antonio event. The Commission invites everyone to participate in the following Commemorative events:

 

SATURDAY, JAN. 19, 2019
Youth Summit
9:00 a.m. • Sam Houston High School • 4635 E Houston Street
A one-day summit with interactive sessions designed to provoke thought and discussion.

 

SUNDAY, JAN. 20, 2019
Wreath-Laying Ceremony
2:00 p.m. • Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza • Intersection of E. Houston and N. New Braunfels
Businesses, organizations, and elected officials are invited to lay wreaths at the MLK, Jr. statue in commemoration.
Citywide Interfaith Worship Service
4:00 p.m. • Second Baptist Church • 3310 E. Commerce Street
This service will feature several invited guest speakers who will present on various topics of faith and the legacy of Dr. King.

 

MONDAY, JAN. 21, 2019
Martin Luther King, Jr. March
10:00 a.m. • Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy • 3501 Martin Luther King Drive
The nearly 3-mile route down Martin Luther King Drive takes participants through San Antonio's historic Eastside in remembrance of Dr. King.
Commemorative Program
11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. • Pittman-Sullivan Park • 1101 Iowa Street
The program will feature San Antonio Mayor, Ron Nirenberg and other national, state, city and county officials. This year’s Keynote Speaker is civil rights activist, Shaun King.

 

THURSDAY, JAN. 24, 2019
Trinity University Commemorative Lecture Series
7:30 p.m. • Trinity University - Laurie Auditorium • One Trinity Place
Trinity is proud to present Ijeoma Oluo as the 2019 keynote speaker. Oluo will be signing copies of her renowned debut book, So You Want to Talk About Race.

 

The MLK Commission has selected Matt Bustamante as the winner of the fourth annual citywide contest for official 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration artwork. The winning piece, titled “Together We Win,” will be used on official promotional items to commemorate the 2019 March and Bustamante will receive public recognition as the creator of the 2019 commemoration artwork.

 

“Mr. Bustamante’s piece beautifully captures how our city encourages people from all backgrounds to come together and use Dr. King’s teaching as the foundation for building community,” said Nathaniel Davis, San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission Chair. “I am thrilled to have this image represent the 2019 commemoration.”

 

All MLK Commemorative Events are free and open to the public.
