SAN ANTONIO (March 15, 2019) – For the fourth year in a row, Mission Marquee Plaza, formerly known as the Mission Drive-in, kicks off a new year of community events and programming with its first Farmers and Artisans Market of the season on Saturday, March 16, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank Mobile Mercado and the Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA. The event is free and open to the public. The City’s Parks & Recreation Department will give away 250 native and ornamental trees on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 10 a.m.

The Mobile Mercado “Farmacy on Wheels,” an initiative of the San Antonio Food Bank that serves as a mobile mini grocery store, farmers market, demonstration kitchen and teaching tool will be on site. Community members can learn how to make meals using fresh produce and other healthy ingredients found on the truck. With professional chefs and nutritionists on board offering samples and providing nutrition education, the Mobile Mercado is a healthy and affordable option for the community. The “Farmacy on Wheels” also offers nutritious meals-to-go that have been prepared by the culinary team at the San Antonio Food Bank and often use ingredients sourced from its farm located behind Mission San Juan Capistrano.

The Mobile Mercado accepts cash, credit cards and Lone Star cards for payment. During the months of May through October, the Food Bank will issue and redeem WIC and Senior Vouchers from the Texas Department of Agriculture (October is redeem only). Proceeds support the San Antonio Food Bank’s mission of fighting hunger in Southwest Texas.

“The World Heritage Office is excited to provide this programming to our community,” said World Heritage Director Colleen Swain. “Our partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank not only brings nutritional education and affordable fruits and vegetables, but provides locals and visitors an opportunity to taste San Antonio’s gastronomic culture. The market is a sustainable option that we hope to continue for years to come.”

In partnership with the YMCA, the Markets will offer free community fitness classes at the Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA. All fitness levels are welcome and beginners are encouraged to attend. Classes will be held inside the Harvey E. Najim YMCA with this Saturday’s class beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The Farmers and Artisans Market at Mission Marquee Plaza will take place every third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning March 16, 2019 and will run through November 16, 2019. Participants will enjoy interactive workshops, holiday themed events, book giveaways, live music performances, over 25 artisans and popup vendors and more. Our markets are certified with the Texas Department of Agriculture, and GO TEXAN. The Markets welcome family, friends and are always pet-friendly!

Mission Marquee Plaza was acquired by the City of San Antonio in 2007, and has undergone several renovations including a mural re-creation project completed by the City in 2013 and most recently in 2018, the addition of a greenroom for performances. Since then, the City has coordinated many popular events at this historic venue for the entire community. The Market is part of a growing number of events and programs that you will see throughout the year at Mission Marquee Plaza.
