SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 20, 2019) – The City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Economic Development Corporation (SAEDC) will host the first in a series of Military Medical Industry Days on March 28, 2019 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (Room 217) from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Through a series of Industry Days, the City and SAEDC plan to showcase the significant military medical research and technology undertakings in San Antonio, and promote opportunities for collaboration and partnerships.
This initial Military Medical Industry Day event will feature the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (ISR), located at Fort Sam Houston. The ISR is the Army’s premier research organization focused exclusively on the combat wounded and home to the only Burn Center in the Department of Defense. At this event, the ISR will provide presentations to the community on their research capabilities and ongoing research projects to meet military mission requirements. Such areas of research include burn injuries, hemorrhage control, blood products, and orthopedic, dental and craniofacial trauma. The ISR will also discuss opportunities for community stakeholders to collaborate and the various pathways for partnering on technology and research and development opportunities.
“The City and SAEDC are excited to host this inaugural Military Medical Industry Day featuring the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, as part of the City’s larger efforts to help our military medical research organizations achieve their mission objectives,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “This event is also a key part of implementing the San Antonio Military Life Science Commercialization Action Plan, which was completed in 2018. Through this plan, we are focused on leveraging military medical research for commercialization opportunities in order to create new life science companies and jobs here in San Antonio.”
“The ISR is a world class research institute and a proud partner of the San Antonio community. We look forward to sharing some of the research and clinical contributions made to the care of the combat wounded,” Col. (Dr.) Jerome Buller, ISR Commander said. “We hope that this event inspires the community to enhance our partnerships by helping us mature and transition life-saving technologies to future battlefields more rapidly.”
San Antonio is home to several leading military medical research missions including the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), the Navy Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA), and the Air Force’s 59th Medical Wing. Along with local private medical and academic research institutions such as Texas BioMed, Southwest Research Institute, BioBridge Global, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), and more, these military medical missions provide tremendous prospects for partnerships and life science commercialization opportunities.
The City and SAEDC plan to host similar Industry Day events in the coming months with the NAMRU-SA at Fort Sam Houston and the 59th Medical Wing at Lackland Air Force Base. The event is free and open to the public.
