SAN ANTONIO (April 4, 2019) - San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s  (Metro Health) Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic and Prevention Partners prepare to perform a second annual testing challenge in the city. The challenge led by Councilwoman Ana Sandoval is a friendly competition among city council districts aimed to motivate residents to get tested.

April is STD Awareness Month. The national annual observance is promoted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to raise public awareness about the impact of STDs on the lives of Americans and the importance of preventing, testing for, and treating STDs. It is an opportunity to normalize routine STD testing and conversations about sexual health.

In San Antonio, 1 in 8 people with HIV don’t know they have the virus. For the past ten years, Bexar County’s new HIV diagnosis rates have been consistently higher than the state and national rates. Metro Health and prevention partners seek to increase the number of individuals aware of their STD status to curve the spread of HIV in the community with the goal of eliminating new infections altogether over time.

This year, Metro Health will introduce its newly designed mobile unit highlighting the #IknowmystatusSA brand. The mobile unit functions as an extension of the health clinic and has the ability to travel throughout San Antonio to provide testing and treatment for most STDs.

The campaign goal is to test 4,000 individuals for STDs in Bexar County. Metro Health and prevention partners including Alamo Area Resource Center (AARC), Beat AIDS Coalition, Center for Health Care Services, SA AIDS Foundation, San Antonio Fighting Back, University Health System (FFACTS Clinic) will work together to provide testing around the city.
