SAN ANTONIO (April 10, 2019) – The City of San Antonio and the Urban Soccer Leadership Academy (USLA) will celebrate the beginning of construction for the Old Spanish Trails Park, a 2017-2022 Bond Program project. The project is located in City Council District 1 and is along the council border of District 7.

The improvements are part of a two phase project converting a pair of unoccupied storm water detention basins into more than  10 acres of high-quality sports recreation fields and accommodations.

“This project is exciting and unique because it provides a twofold impact on our community,” stated Razi Hosseini, Transportation & Capital Improvements Interim Director/City Engineer. “When this project is complete, the basins located here will become the home for a premier soccer program that serves our local urban youth, helping to build their character and leadership skills.”

Phase I and II of the construction began in March 2019 and with vegetation removal and grading operations.

Phase I construction is focused on the northern basin and includes the installation of a drainage and irrigation system, followed by soil preparation using compost manufactured using organics collected by the City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department.   High quality sports field turf will be installed over the improved soils within the basin to be lit by new LED pole lighting during evening play. A central concrete walkway will house a drainage system and a series of removable bleachers. Sports field equipment and panel signage will finish this phase within the northern basin.

Phase II of the construction continues within the northern basin, expanding the area of competitive sports fields with irrigation, turf, LED pole lighting and an area for service vehicle access and parking.  The southern basin will receive similar treatment; grading improvements, site irrigation, field turf and LED lighting.  This basin has been designed for practice level play amenities and recreational play.

The project was designed by Rialto Studio, Inc. and will be constructed by Crownhill Builders, Inc. All construction is scheduled for completion in Fall 2019. Total cost for this project is approximately $3M.
