SAN ANTONIO (April 16, 2019) — District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez filed a CCR today that would require all new buildings with public restrooms to provide baby changing stations in both men’s and women’s bathrooms.
“Requiring the installation of baby changing stations in all public restroom facilities aligns with our efforts to continuously improve quality of life and increase equity for San Antonio residents,” said Councilman Pelaez. “We’ve all seen that parent in a parking lot changing their baby’s diaper out of the back of their car. Everybody should be able to change their baby’s diapers in clean, safe facilities and this new ordinance will make family outings a safer and more dignified experience for parents and babies,” Pelaez said.
Often, baby changing stations are only available in women’s public restrooms or not at all. Many parents or caregivers are forced to change their baby’s diapers in public, to use unsanitary and unsafe bathroom sinks or floors, or to even delay changing a diaper all together.
The condition of providing baby changing accommodations in both men’s and women’s public facilities will allow parents to have equal access to sanitary and safe spaces when changing their baby’s diapers.
