SAN ANTONIO (April 30, 2019) – May is Mental Health Month, which was started 70 years ago by  Mental Health America to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone. To celebrate Mental Health Month, Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the Mayor’s Fitness Council are releasing a behavioral and mental health resource guide / toolkit for San Antonio employers.

The toolkit was written by members of the San Antonio Health Advisory Board, practicing psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The YMCA and the Mayor’s Fitness Council assisted with design and prepared it for public release. The toolkit provides resources and guidance for San Antonio employers to incorporate mental health into their wellness programming.

“It is our hope that these recommendations and best practices will decrease stigma, increase and enhance help-seeking, and lead to mentally healthier communities and workforce,” said Dr. Rao from the Mayor’s Fitness Council’s Executive Committee.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg has encouraged the Mayor’s Fitness Council to prioritize mental health in addition to physical activity and nutrition. The mission of the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to lead San Antonio to increase awareness and connect San Antonio residents to opportunities for improved emotional well-being, physical activity, and healthy eating. “Mental and emotional well-being is essential to overall health. Positive mental health allows people to realize their full potential and cope with the stresses of life,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “This toolkit is just one way we can help guide people towards positive mental health.”
