SAN ANTONIO (May 29, 2019) — Today, City Council received a briefing on the 2019 Status of Women report. The report provides an overview of ongoing gender disparities in San Antonio with specific focus on women’s health and well-being, economic opportunities, political participation and safety.
Councilwoman Sandoval released the following statement:
“This is a sobering report that every San Antonian needs to be familiar with. Too often, we talk about gender inequality as if we ended it decades ago. This report makes clear that our work is far from over.”
“If women are not okay, we as a city are not okay. Women are our daughters, mothers, and sisters—often our caretakers and always the anchors in our communities. We owe it to every woman in San Antonio to ensure their safety and prosperity.”
Additionally, the following quote from Councilwoman Sandoval appears in the report’s section on violence against women:
“Domestic violence and sexual assault deprive women and girls of their ability to live with dignity. In extreme cases, it robs women of their liberty and ability to pursue happiness. Unfortunately, this violence is far too common. San Antonio should be a place of safety and opportunity for all residents—including women and girls. I’m proud City Council is driving resources and policy to protect women and girls so they may live life to the fullest.”
