SAN ANTONIO (June 21, 2019) – San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has set yet another record for passenger growth for the month of May. This month’s record passenger numbers extends the streak of record setting numbers to 35 consecutive months.
A total of 896,154 passengers flew through the airport in May of this year, representing a 7% growth rate over May 2018 and the highest of any May on record. The continued growth is not only due to added routes, but also the success of maintaining and expanding upon current air services offered at SAT.
Domestic traffic rose just over 6% compared to the same month last year, while international travel saw the biggest hike with an increase of 23% from May of 2018. May also saw Sun Country Airlines adding new nonstop service to Minneapolis/St. Paul which contributed to the month’s unprecedented increase in traffic.
Another significant amount of growth was recorded in the air cargo category. A total of 24,847,211 pounds of air cargo moved through SAT in May, representing a remarkable 6% increase, the fourth highest of any month on record.
Since 2016, SAT has welcomed multiple routes to new destinations and new carriers. “Just over three years ago, we set forth on an air service development plan that focused on three components: maintaining the present level of service, expanding the existing portfolio and growing with new airlines and markets” said Brian Pratte, Chief Air Service Development Officer for the City of San Antonio. Since that time SAT recorded impressive growth.
“Based on the projected numbers, we anticipate the positive trend to continue as we focus on the future of the airport”, said Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio.
