SAN ANTONIO (June 24, 2019) – During a Special Meeting of the City Council, City Council approved an ordinance to grant a residence homestead exemption in the City for 2019. The following is Councilman Clayton Perry’s statement:

“I’m extremely proud to provide San Antonio’s homeowners with a City Homestead Tax Exemption, a first for our city. Homeownership is a cornerstone of preserving neighborhoods and one of the greatest tools for creating and preserving wealth for families. The residents of San Antonio deserve real property tax relief and City Council is finally taking a step in the right direction.

Property tax relief is something that our neighbors have demanded of their representation. For the last two years, I have tirelessly researched and promoted the necessity for a City Homestead Tax Exemption. This year, with the support of Councilman John Courage and the majority of our council colleagues, we are able to provide our neighbors with a small, but meaningful, tax break. Although previous attempts to enact a City Homestead Tax Exemption were unsuccessful, I am glad that City Council jumped on the opportunity to help mitigate the effects of rising property valuations.

A .01% exemption may not sound like much, but it does have a cumulative impact that will help homeowners over time. The City Homestead Tax Exemption, in combination with the recent passage of House Bill 3, which provides for school district tax cuts, will provide meaningful tax relief to homeowners in San Antonio.

This has been a hard fought battle and I am grateful for the support of City Council and the Mayor. It is my pledge to continue working with City Council and City staff to craft a responsible budget and to continue working towards a larger City Homestead Tax Exemption for San Antonians in the years to come.”
