SAN ANTONIO (July 1, 2019) –The recently completed “Status of Women in San Antonio” report found that of the 81 Boards and Commissions seats, women made up less than one third of the membership on committees. This membership lag is associated, in part, with childcare costs. In San Antonio those costs exceed twenty percent of the median state family income. This poses an economic burden for women to participate in civic engagement.
In order to address the childcare barrier and the gender disparity on the City’s Boards and Commissions, Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales today filed a Council Consideration Request to establish free childcare for all board and commissions participants.
“The status of women report exposed many areas - in health, education, economy, and politics - where we need to begin work, now, to lift women in our city,” said Councilwoman Gonzales. “This Council Consideration Request is the first step in addressing the status of women with clear vision and bold action.”
