SAN ANTONIO (June 16, 2019) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg is presiding this week over the Sister Cities National Conference in Houston. City leaders attending the event will focus on business and trade.

The theme of the conference, being held in Houston, is “Cities Mean Business.”

“The relationships we build through our sister cities and through the Sister Cities International organization are portals for international investment and economic development. The value of these relationships grows over time,’’ said Mayor Nirenberg, chairman of Sister Cities International.

The mayor added, “The majority of San Antonio’s economic growth is linked to international activity through export/import activities of local businesses and actual foreign investment through foreign businesses opening facilities in the city or bringing capital investments.”

San Antonio has 11 sister cities and three friendship cities. More than 26 nations have investments in San Antonio.

In addition to the national conference main sessions, pre-conference events include a China-U.S. Mayors Sister Cities Summit and an African Economic Development Symposium.

“There is broad recognition in international business circles and diplomatic circles that economic partnerships don’t just happen,” said Mayor Nirenberg. “They require lots of work and relationship building that happens at the civic level and citizen-to-citizen level -- from education exchanges to cultural exchanges, to artistic exchanges. Citizen-to-citizen diplomacy is what paves a path toward political and economic partnership between nations.”

The national conference will take place today through Friday. The final evening features a “fireside chat” with former President George W. Bush.
