SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 15, 2019) — City Council today unanimously approved a resolution calling for federal and state action to end gun violence.

“We must refuse to sit idly by while communities are shattered. Today, we resolve to call on all governments to assist us in protecting our community,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who praised his colleagues for their collaboration on drafting the resolution.

The Mayor added, “San Antonio has consistently shelved politics for the betterment of our community. In addressing the rise of gun violence in America, today should be no different for our city.”

The resolution urged Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special session to consider the proposals in the governor’s School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, which included a red flag law or “extreme protective orders.” Abbott released the plan in 2018, but lawmakers did not act on the proposals during this year’s legislative session.

City Council also urged the United State Senate to begin deliberations on bipartisan gun safety legislation that has been approved by the House of Representatives.

The resolution also committed to review and identify local action that can be taken to enhance the safety of the City’s residents.
