Tragic Passing of Firefighter Greg Garza

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 15, 2019) – The San Antonio Fire Department is mourning the loss of our Brother, Fire Fighter Greg Garza. This morning, Firefighters were called to the Comfort Suites on the 500 block of Live Oak to assist with an incident. As our team was staging the scene, Greg Garza was struck by a vehicle in front of his stationed fire apparatus, which was parked outside of the hotel. Greg was transported in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

Chief Hood says, “Greg Garza was a happy individual that loved being a Firefighter. He was a gentle giant; every time you saw Greg, you saw a smile on his face. I knew and I loved Greg Garza.”

Although this is a difficult time for our SAFD family, we stand ready and prepared to serve and protect your family as always.

Along with prayers for the department and Greg’s family, we ask everyone to remember to watch out for first responders when driving. Please pay attention to what is ahead of you. Please do not rubber-neck. Please slow down. Please pull over if necessary. Please think about us.

Memorial services are pending.
