SAN ANTONIO (October 30, 2019) – Today in B Session, City Council was briefed on the newly unveiled City of San Antonio Domestic Violence Comprehensive Plan. Following the announcement of this plan, Councilman Peláez released this statement:

“In May of this year Councilwoman Gonzales and I announced our joint Council Consideration Request to boost funding and develop a comprehensive plan to address domestic violence in San Antonio. The plan that Dr. Bridger presented today fulfills the spirit of that request and paves the way for its realization.

The City of San Antonio Domestic Violence Comprehensive Plan ensures funding for prevention and public education programming, the expansion of legal and survivor support services, and further analysis of the issue.

It is comprehensive and encompassing in the way it takes into account gaps in the healthcare, judicial, non-profit, and law enforcement systems and provides data-driven strategies to bridge these gaps.

Survivors of domestic violence deserve a public response that registers the gravity of the issue and acts accordingly to reduce it. This plan does just that by charting a course to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors. These concerted, innovative actions will enable our community to disrupt the cycle of abuse.

I commend the efforts of Metro Health, the Department of Human Services, and the San Antonio Police Department for shaping this plan and applying a public health approach to addressing domestic violence.”
