SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 19, 2019) – The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) recently honored the City of San Antonio’s Small Business Economic Development Advocacy (SBEDA) program with a “Gold Award” in the category of Economic Equity and Inclusion for Populations Greater than 500,000. The category recognizes successful, innovative programs dedicated to promoting economic equity and inclusion, as well as those that provide increased access to government and community resources to an undeserved populace. The honor was presented at an awards ceremony during the IEDC Annual Conference in Indianapolis, IN.

“This recognition as the “Gold Award” recipient by the International Economic Development Council is the highest award any community could have received in the Economic Equity and Inclusion category,” said San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh. “This award recognizes the achievements of the SBEDA program and the positive impact it’s had on our local small, minority, and women-owned business community.”

The SBEDA program, administered by the City of San Antonio’s Small Business Office, addresses disparities experienced by local minority and women-owned businesses by creating City contract opportunities that promote the equitable utilization of all local business groups. Between 2011 and 2018, the City increased its spending with local minority and women-owned businesses from $6 million to $186 million annually. These City contract payments spur job creation, job retention, and improve the overall quality of life for the business owners and employees, while also helping to break down barriers of inequality and improve the vitality of the entire business community. Additionally, a study conducted in 2017 found the program had a total economic impact of $900 million on the San Antonio economy.

“The recipients of IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Development awards represent the very best of economic development and exemplify the ingenuity, integrity, and leadership that our profession strives for each and every day”, said 2019 IEDC Board Chair, Tracye McDaniel. “We’re honored to recognize more than 100 communities for their excellent work, which forges new opportunities for our profession. We look forward to even greater participation from economic developers across the globe in the 2020 awards program.”

IEDC's Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognizes the world's best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials, and the year's most influential leaders. Thirty-four award categories honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Awards are judged by a diverse panel of economic and community developers from around the world, following a nomination process held earlier this year. IEDC received over 400 submissions from 12 countries.
