San Antonio (January 28, 2020) – Official industry travel numbers have been released and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) broke its record for 2019, surpassing the record set in 2018. More than 10.36 million travelers moved through the airport in 2019, setting an all-time record for passenger traffic at SAT.

“This is the 10th straight year of passenger growth, which is great news for our economy, tourism, the community and our proud SAT team,” said Tom Bartlett, Acting Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio.

Last year, SAT welcomed 320,000 more passengers than 2018 while also surpassing another record for the month of December. Domestic and international passenger statistics rose to more than 888,000 passengers, a 1.4% growth increase. The capacity increase is credited to significant growth by carriers with service to Mexico, with Volaris growing an impressive 43%. The network carriers also stood out, despite the grounding of the Boeing 737-Max aircraft for a significant portion of the past year, led by American Airlines with an increase of 11%.

Over the past three and half years, 40 of the last 44 months have exceeded the previous passenger record for that month. This is just the second time in the airport’s history to eclipse the 10 million passenger mark, first done when the airport reached 10-million plus passengers in 2018. Since 2016, passenger traffic at SAT has grown at a staggering rate, nearly double the national average, with a growth of 20.2%.

“As our region and our demand for air travel continues to grow, our team remains focused on attracting new potential carriers while continuing to maintain and expand routes with our existing airline partners,” Bartlett said.

In addition to domestic and international passenger growth, SAT also surpassed goals for air cargo. Over 277,000,000 pounds of cargo moved through the airport in 2019.
