City’s Senior Centers Commemorating Black History Month

Activities include film screenings, poetry readings, Black History presentations and more

SAN ANTONIO (February 12, 2020) – In honor of Black History Month, the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services Senior Centers are hosting a variety of free activities during the month of February.

 

Every day in San Antonio, seniors 60 years of age and older are participating in an exciting array of programs and services specifically designed for older adults. The Comprehensive Senior Centers and nutrition sites are located across the city and are open Monday to Friday throughout the year, offering a nutritious midday meal, some fun group exercise, a computer class, and so much more.

 

The following sites have scheduled Black History Month events:

 

Bob Ross Senior Center, 2219 Babcock Road, 78229

  • Friday, February 21, 10 a.m. – Field trip to Little Carver Theater, stage adaptation of “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry”

 
Claude Black Community Center Nutrition Site, 2805 E. Commerce, 78203

  • Tuesday, February 18, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Reading of Toni Morrison’s “Pieces of Me”
  • Tuesday, February 25, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Soul Food tasting

 

District 2 Senior Center, 1751 S. W.W. White Road, 78220

  • All month – Participants holding Black History talks
  • Friday, February 14, 10:45 a.m. – Black History trivia
  • Thursday, February 20, all day – Wear your traditional African attire
  • Thursday, February 20, 10:30 a.m. – African head wraps. Bring your own scarf.
  • Tuesday, February 25 – Hirsch Elementary School Choir visits

 

Northeast Senior Center, 4135 Thousand Oaks, 78239

  • Thursday, February 27, 11 to 11:30 a.m. – Participants invited to dress in traditional African attire, Black History presentations

 

West End Park Senior Center, 1226 N.W. 18th St., 78207

  • Friday, February 21 – Screening of “Harriet”
