SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 13, 2020) – San Antonio earned the statewide recognition and title of Metropolitan City Division Champions in the 2020 “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge”, which is an 8-week challenge built around healthy actions like getting a workout, eating nutritious food, and drinking plenty of water. People signed up on behalf of their city or school district and earned points for their community with every healthy action they submitted. San Antonio competed in this Community Challenge along with other Texas metropolitan cities, such as Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin, and Corpus Christi from January 6 – March 1, 2020. As a result of earning the most points, San Antonio came out on top of this competition. The Mayor’s Fitness Council, along with Mayor Ron Nirenberg were honored to receive the championship trophy for this competition on July 22, 2020.
“I’ve always believed in the importance of health and fitness, and I am proud that San Antonio stepped up to the plate for the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. Our recognition as the top-ranking metropolitan city showcases that San Antonians exceeded the challenge to be active and eat smarter. Congratulations to all of the participants who contributed to making this our most impactful Community Challenge yet,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a statement.
North East Independent School District also received recognition in the 2020 “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge” by earning the state-wide title of Large School District Division Champions. San Antonio and North East Independent School District received championship trophies and grant prizes to expand on health and wellness goals and initiatives in San Antonio.
The upcoming 2021 “It's Time Texas Community Challenge” will occur January 4 - February 28, 2021.
