SAN ANTONIO (October 23, 2020) — Yesterday, the City of San Antonio Economic Workforce Development Committee (EWDC), chaired by Councilwoman Viagran, was updated on the Workforce Development program called "Train for Jobs SA."

The following is a statement from Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran regarding the updates.

We had nearly 1,393 residents complete a preliminary intake for this program, with 900 of those residents being referred to partnering agencies.  Because of those referrals, 244 residents successfully enrolled in training courses. Our goal is to increase this number to 550 residents by the end of this month. We are very confident we will meet this goal.

Our numbers show that 68% of residents completing the intake process are women, and over 80% of residents are people of color, with a high percentage living in poverty. These demographics convey that we are reaching our target audiences and that there is a strong need for advanced education and workforce training.

“Understanding the importance of investing in San Antonio’s workforce is imperative, and by creating a course towards economic mobility through quality programming that offers free training, and advanced education is a step in the right path for our city's workers.” Said Councilwoman Viagran, “As chair of the Economic Workforce Development Committee, I have been tasked with leading the charge to focus on job training and workforce development during this unprecedented time.”

On November 13, 2020, we will continue with our next steps, including gathering feedback from residents and conducting focus groups for the" Train for Jobs SA" program. We will report these details at the EWDC meeting on December 1, 2020.
