Sunglo Urban Homes and Lotus Urban Homes Green Living Community Developments Groundbreaking Celebrated in South San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 6, 2015) — U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, representatives from County Commissioner Tommy Calvert’s office, Center City Development and Operations, Varga Endeavors LLC, BIG RED DOG, Sprinkle & Co. Architects and Build San Antonio Green gathered today to announce the groundbreaking of the new Sunglo Urban Homes and Lotus Urban Homes green living community developments.

Once completed, Lotus Urban Homes, located on 1603 S. Presa, will be a 17-unit development. The site was an abandoned hotel and bar that will now give people a place to live and enjoy the urban life style. Sunglo Urban Homes at 1519 S. Presa will be a 10-unit development. The property was formerly a Citgo gas station, but those behind the project now have plans to transform it into a green living community. Both developments will be certified by Build San Antonio Green.

“Sunglo Urban Homes and Lotus Urban Homes will provide significant economic benefit by addressing reinvestment and infill development priorities,” said District 1 Councilman Roberto C. Treviño. “The developments bring a modern, green living community to the Southside, while respecting the historic and cultural character of the neighborhood.”

The City of San Antonio will provide more than $500,000 in incentives to the Sunglo Urban Homes development project. The Lotus Urban Homes project is eligible for more than $100,000 in incentives in the form of City and SAWS fee waivers. The developments are set to be completed by the end of 2016. The development will meet objectives of the Neighborhood Conservation District related to private investment, infrastructure improvements, increasing housing options and hiring a local and minority workforce.

“I’m excited to get to work on both of these projects, particularly Sunglo,” said Efraim Varga, owner of Varga Endeavors LLC. “It’s so great to be taking property that was once used for something that harms our environment and give it a new life and purpose.”

Joining Varga Endeavors on Sunglo Urban Homes and Lotus Urban Homes are partners Harris-Bay and Brent Gamble, respectively. BIG RED DOG and Sprinkle & Co. are also partners on the project.
