SAN ANTONIO (April 6, 2016) — As the Chair of the Council’s Criminal Justice, Public Safety and Services Committee, Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran encourages the entire community to “Be Smart Participants” during Fiesta’s 125th anniversary taking place April 14-24. As the City's largest celebration, the San Antonio Police Department is making plans to ensure the safety of participants, spectators and first responders.
“With upwards of 3.5 million participants, it is our job as City leaders to make certain our residents and out of town guests are safe during the celebration,” remarked Councilwoman Viagran at today’s Council committee meeting.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus briefed the committee on the 2016 Fiesta Safety Plan outlining expectations resulting from the Open Carry Law, the overall expected police presence and the coordination efforts of external law enforcement agencies.
The SAPD is also coordinating efforts with the Bexar County Sherriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the local FBI team.
“The 11-day event will have 3,703 police officer assignments, specialized units, three field command posts and a daily incident management team,” reported Chief McManus. “We are here to serve our community but remind everyone – if you ‘See Something, Say Something’.”
To report incidents, call (210) 207-SAPD. In case of emergency, call 9-1-1.
“This year’s celebrations will no doubt be extraordinary,” concluded Councilwoman Viagran. “I remind everyone to be safe, be aware, be proactive and be smart participants.
