S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization) is a partnership between the Office of Historic Preservation, the UTSA College of Architecture, San Antonio College, the Historic Preservation Association (HPA), and local contractors to provide minor exterior home repairs and maintenance to homeowners within local historic districts. Graduate and undergraduate architecture students assist property owners with repairs to windows and screens, siding, and porches, as well as provide general yard maintenance and exterior painting. This is a free service provided to eligible property owners.
We are excited to announce that the next S.T.A.R. event will take place on October 7-8 in the St. Cecilia Neighborhood on S Presa!
You can get involved in TWO ways: lead a team of students as a volunteer contractor or support STAR as an event sponsor. Please indicate your interest here by September 1. Rehabber Club members who participate in S.T.A.R. will earn credits that build their Rehabber Club status. This event is a great way to build recognition within the community while educating the next generation of rehabbers! Email email@example.com for more information.
S.T.A.R. is Awarded $10,000 Wells Fargo Housing Foundation Grant
The Wells Fargo Housing Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Power of Preservation Foundation, a non-profit of the City’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP). San Antonio-based Loan Administration Manager Tasonia Hendrix nominated the organization and helped coordinate the process of awarding the grant.
“Wells Fargo has long understood that we can be no stronger, nor more successful, than the neighborhoods and communities where we do business. Supporting our communities allows us to better meet our customers' financial needs and helps us to achieve our goal to be one of America's best companies,” said Steve Arnold, area president for Wells Fargo in San Antonio.
These funds will be used for the Students Together Achieving Revitalization (S.T.A.R.) Project, a homeowner assistance program offered by the OHP in collaboration with the UTSA College of Architecture and the San Antonio College. Twice a year, architecture and construction management students, with the help of local volunteer contractors, gather to provide exterior repairs and maintenance to homes in San Antonio’s historic districts. The S.T.A.R. Program was held Nov. 16-17, 2013. Approximately 25 Wells Fargo volunteers assisted the students with the restoration project.
Started in 2012, the Power of Preservation Foundation (PoP) is a coalition of advocates, agencies and private businesses interested in preserving San Antonio’s history, heritage and built environment. In addition to support of preservation programs, PoP seeks to engage young professionals and students to become the next generation of preservationists. - By Helen Bow, Corporate Communications, Wells Fargo
