What is AmeriCorps VISTA?
Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country.
AmeriCorps VISTA, an AmeriCorps program, provides full-time members to create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.
AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. A living stipend, health coverage, relocation allowance, childcare allowance, and post-service Education Award are provided.

Management Fellows program
APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2019 CLASS ARE NOW OPEN!
Since 2007, the City of San Antonio, Texas has offered emerging local government professionals with the opportunity to immerse themselves in local government management and develop real world skills and experience as part of the Management Fellow Program. This nationally-recognized 12-month program, will give you the opportunity to complete important projects and work along side key leaders of the nation's 7th largest city. Each Management Fellow will receive the opportunity to spend four months in each of the following departments:
- the City Manager's Office
- the Office of Management and Budget
- one operating department
Management Fellows will be exposed to multiple challenges that local governments face today, as well as new and innovative methods to deal with these challenges.
Each rotation will provide the Management Fellows with a broad base of experience that will benefit both the individual employee as well as the City in the future.
Upon completion of the 12-month program, City staff will work with each Management Fellow to help them find a full-time position that matches their individual career interests.

The San Antonio Police Department has periodic openings in civilian (non-enforcement, non-sworn) positions, such as dispatchers, school crossing guards, data entry clerks, police service agents, administrative aides, crime analysts, management analysts, evidence technicians, etc.

The City of San Antonio's Student Internship Program provides eligible students with the opportunity to work and gain real-world experience within City departments. Students are enabled to link theory with practice and develop specialized skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.
Participation in the Program is open to all 35+ City departments and offices, providing students with internship opportunities to meet their future career goals. The City is working with area vocational or technical schools, colleges, and universities to ensure participation from a diverse group of students with varied interests, majors, and backgrounds.
How to Apply
The City offers two options for applying for internships:
- General Internship Application - To request an internship with the City, complete a
general internship application general internship application. An application must be submitted for each semester during which you are interested in interning. As part of the application, you can request either a paid or unpaid internship and also indicate the department(s) you are interested in working with. Eligible applications will be forwarded to the requested hiring department(s) for consideration. If a department is able to host an intern, a hiring manager from the department will schedule interviews with selected applicants.
- Featured Internship Opportunities - Hiring departments will occasionally post specific internship opportunities. On our Job Opportunities page, perform a keyword search for Intern to find featured internship opportunities. A separate application must be submitted for each opportunity in order to be considered. If no featured opportunities are available or if you are not interested in the featured opportunities, you can submit a general internship application.
The following requirements apply:
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited vocational or technical school, college, or university (all majors welcome)
- Have completed of the first year of your program of study (preferred)
- Commit to the entire internship session (at least 12 weeks during the spring or fall semester and at least 8 weeks during the summer semester)
- Be eligible to work in the United States
- Possess a willingness to learn, positive attitude, and self-motivation
- Paid and unpaid internships may be available (maximum 20 hour workweek during the semester if internship is unpaid)
- Internships may be eligible for college credit*
- Work locations and schedules vary by department
- Duties vary by department
- Student interns are supported by Intern Mentor and Internship Coordinator
- Starting and ending dates are based upon the needs of the department and will be coordinated with the intern
*Speak with your college or university's academic advisor or career placement office to determine credit eligibility and requirements.
