Step 1 - What Jobs Are Open?

Check to see which positions are currently open by reviewing our employment website. Find a position which interests you. ALL positions in the Main Job Vacancies list require online applications. On all other positions, review the job announcements and pay special attention to the minimum requirements and the application instructions at the bottom of the announcement. These two areas will tell you exactly what qualifications are required and how the evaluation process works.

Step 2 – Applying

Online - Jobs listed under the Main Job Vacancies use online applications ONLY. After finding the position you are interested in and qualified for from our Web site, complete and submit an online application and submit your résumé / cover letter if you wish. If your online application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation e-mail immediately. You will also see the confirmation message on your computer screen.

Résumé - All other positions listed outside of the Main Job Vacancies require a résumé or other documents. Please pay special attention to the job announcement. It will instruct you on how to apply for a particular position.

Step 3 - Wait for Notification

Human Resources Analysts review every résumé and application submitted to determine if the minimum qualifications for the position are met based on what the applicant submits. Online applications will be updated and you will need to look up your status for the particular position for which you applied. Typically, no other notices will be sent to applicants unless selected for an interview.

What happens next?

When a vacancy occurs and approval to hire has been granted, departments will request an eligible-for-hire list from the Human Resources Department. Hiring supervisors or a delegate will review résumés, cover letters, or applications of the individuals placed on the list and select candidates to interview.

Keep in mind that the City of San Antonio receives a high volume of highly competitive applicants each month. Depending on the position, the number of applicants on an eligible-for-hire list can vary from 10 to 1500. Prior to reviewing résumés, department hiring supervisors create a list of qualifications to identify top candidates. This provides the hiring supervisor with a manageable number of applicants to interview. Although many departments have the same positions, each may use them differently and require different qualifications from the candidates selected for interviews.

Résumés: Creating a Résumé for City of San Antonio – Recommended Guidelines

To ensure that all of your experience and education are given full consideration during the selection process, we recommend the following guidelines to assist you.

  • Objective Statement: Provide a brief statement including the specific job title.
  • Education: Identify your educational background by listing your degree, field of study, and school. If you have not yet completed your degree, the education you have completed can be considered if you include the number of credit hours earned and your projected graduation date.
  • Experience: Prepare your résumé in a chronological format identifying the dates of your work experience in a month/year format, beginning with your present or most recent position. Describe your employment history, for at least the past five years. Be sure to include all employment history relevant to the position you are applying for, even if it is more than five years ago. Include job titles, names of the organizations you worked for, duties, and number of employees you supervised (if applicable). Include relevant information requested in the job announcement; this ensures that you will receive full consideration for your knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience. List the last salary (estimates are acceptable) for each position – this will help the analyst compare and match job titles from different organizations.
  • Additional Skills and Training: Include all relevant part-time or volunteer experience, and training.
Cover Letter: Creating a Cover Letter for COSA Jobs – Recommended Guidelines

Purpose: Introduce yourself, sell the hiring manager on how well your specific skills, abilities, and attributes match the organization’s needs. This document is your first impression and initial marketing tool. It is your chance to "speak" to the reader or hiring manger. To give your letter a competitive edge, you should focus on communicating your skills and achievements. It should be concise, hard-hitting, capture the attention of the reader, and motivate them to view your resume and application in-depth.

An effective cover letter has 3 main components:

  • Identify the specific job and how you learned about it.
  • Match your skills, experience, training, and education with the job requirements, using your specific knowledge of the City department.
  • The last line should emphasize your enthusiasm and interest in the job.

Cover Letter Guidelines

  • Use standard business letter format.
  • Use paper that matches your résumé, plain white paper is preferred (unless applying online).
  • Proofread carefully (better yet, get a trusted person to proofread).
  • Sell yourself. Be formal, polite, honest, and assertive.
  • Sign and send the original, keep a copy.
  • Do your homework on the organization/department.
  • As a general guideline, a cover letter should be between 1 –1 ½ pages, depending on your experience and the level of the position.
  • Please address the cover letter to "(name of the position) Selection Committee."

The cover letter is usually your first opportunity to make a first impression. Make it an excellent impression.


City of San Antonio Student Internships offer degree-seeking college and university students an opportunity to gain practical work experience with flexible work schedules around their college courses. Students are exposed to valuable learning experiences such as working in a professional workplace and assisting with projects that are vital to the success of the department. City of San Antonio Student Internships offer positions to students majoring in various disciplines.

City of San Antonio Student Internships also provide the opportunity for students to validate concepts and skills taught in the classroom in a real-world work setting and build a work history of relevant experience, assisting the students in their public service career. education & experience requirements

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two (2) years of related full-time experience for one (1) year of higher education or one (1) year of related higher education for two (2) years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One (1) year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One (1) year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Experience cannot be substituted for a high school diploma or GED equivalent. High school diplomas and GEDs must be recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
