SAN ANTONIO (April 16, 2018) – The City of San Antonio, Department of Human Services (DHS) is joining the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in observing the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act and celebrating National Fair Housing Month in April.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg has proclaimed April as National Fair Housing Month in San Antonio.

“The intent of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 is to break down barriers and open doors to upward mobility for all people,” Melody Woosley, DHS Director, said. “The DHS Fair Housing Program helps people forge successful lives, and our team helps residents reap the full promises of the Fair Housing Act.”

During the months-long observance, the DHS Fair Housing program and its partners will host an educational outreach campaign to inform citizens of their right to fair housing. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of dwelling based on race, national origin, religion, age, sex, family status, or disability.

This year’s observance theme, “Fair Housing Act – 50 Years of Opening Doors,” aims to educate residents on the gains that have been made for fair housing since 1968, as well as highlight how much more is needed to make fair housing a living reality for all.

The DHS Fair Housing/Housing Counseling program helps renters, homeowners and landlords in San Antonio maintain housing stability, which is key to family well-being. The program is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency.

The Fair Housing program provides the following services:

·         Tenant and landlord mediation

·         Default counseling to homeowners

·         Investigation of discrimination complaints

·         Home equity conversion

·         Real estate advertisement monitoring

·         Plan reviews for accessibility requirements

·         Referrals and community outreach
