Head Start Program supports National Influenza Vaccination Week

CONTACT: Roland Martinez, (210) 207-5920

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 5, 2018) – The Department of Human Services Head Start program is observing National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), December 2-8, and reminding community members not to give the flu a chance this holiday season.

NIVW highlights the importance of continuing flu vaccinations through the holiday season and beyond. The weeklong observance serves as a reminder that even though the holiday season has arrived, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine.

As long as flu viruses are spreading and causing illness, vaccination should continue in order to protect as many people as possible against the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season.

The DHS Head Start program is collaborating with the Metro Health Immunization Outreach and Education program to provide free flu vaccines to Head Start children and their families in the San Antonio and Edgewood independent school districts during the months of November and December. Getting the flu can mean missing a week or more of school.

School-based flu clinics have proven to be a valuable strategy in reducing flu-like illness in children and their close contacts.

In observance of National Influenza Vaccination Week, a school-based flu clinic for Head Start children is scheduled:
